There are many critics of tracking calories, which I fully understand their perspective. It is tedious, somewhat inaccurate, unsustainable. However, just because something only works temporarily doesn’t mean it’s not a great learning tool. Most people that come to me have a limited knowledge of what a calorie is; what protein/carbs/fats are; what foods have protein/carbs/fats; how to read a nutrition label; TDEE and RMR. I explain all these concepts to my clients, but there is no better learning experience than them looking at their macronutrient and calorie content of each food they eat every day. I remember the first time I tracked my calories using a calorie tracking app. I knew at the time I ate pretty healthily, but I wasn’t losing any weight, therefore my I was probably eating too many calories. My hypothesis became real when I actually measured out the peanut butter I would normally eat with my apple which came to 800 calories. So my “snack” of apples and peanut butter was more on the calorie range of a large meal.
For many others, they are not aware of the calorie content of each of the foods they are eating on a normal basis either. The tracking gets them thinking about their food each time they eat. Do they really need that BBQ sauce, the creamer in their coffee, or the bun on their burger? The tracking allows them to make choices about what they can cut out of their lives without us trainers telling them what they can or can not eat. Once again, People are the experts on themselves, therefore if we can have people voice the arguments for change, they can often talk themselves into change. Eventually, they will be able to look at a banana or a 4 oz steak or a slice of cheese and be able to estimate how many calories are in that product because they have put that food in their food diary a number of times. When they get to this point, they probably won’t need the tracker anymore. But for the beginning of someone’s journey in losing weight, calorie tracking is a fantastic tool!
